Exchange users can manage Windows Mobile Policies and setup in Exchange Admin under the Mobile Services link.
The Mobile Services tab makes it easier for Exchange users to control the administration of Windows Mobile Policies, which allow you to affect the way that Exchange server interacts with mobile devices.
You can set up a series of policies and apply different policies to different mailboxes.
|
There's no reason why you "have to" create a new policy. If you don't create a new policy, the default policy settings are still active and enforced on all accounts. Therefore you may wish to at least become familiar with the policies. You can also disable any policy from being enforced for a particular mailbox -- to do this see the Manage Mailboxes topic. |
The settings that can be used in a policy are as follows:
Inactivity Timeout (default = 25 min): You can specify a period of time before the connection is closed due to inactivity.
Wipe device after failed attempts (default = 5): If the wrong device password is entered for x number of times for accessing the mobile device, the device will be "wiped" -- meaning the connection to exchange will be removed. It is also technically possible to do a complete remote wipe. For example, if a device is lost, you can manually wipe it. This destroys all data on the device, not just mail. Because of legal issues, a customer must call support and fill out a permission form.
Minimum PIN length (default = 4): This setting affects how long the password must be for exchange mailboxes that have this policy. A longer minimum password length allows for a more secure password.
Password Complexity (default = numeric): This setting affects how complex the password must be. The alphanumeric option requires numbers and letters; the numeric option requires only numbers and is less secure; the "anything goes" option allows any combination of characters, and can be less or more secure depending on how it is used. (ex: using characters such as !@#$ in passwords can make them more secure, using only letters can make it less secure.)
Refresh Interval (default = 30 minutes): This setting affects how often the device will check with the exchange server. The mail/calendar/etc. will be updated on the device automatically at this interval if there is no specific request from the user to refresh.

Changing the PIN and password settings for a policy and then applying it to particular mailboxes will result in the device user needing to change their password. The next time they use the device they will be prompted to enter the old password in and then the new. |
