Synchronizing Files

The Synchronize feature is particularly useful when you want to make sure that the folders on your local computer exactly mirror the files on the server, or vice versa.

For example, you may have updated some files on your computer, but you're not sure which ones to upload. The synchronize feature will make sure that whatever has changed on your local computer will be uploaded to the server.

Or you may end up in a situation where someone has updated your Web site, and you want to make sure you have all the latest files on your local computer. So you could use the synchronize feature to make sure your local folder reflects the latest version of the Web site.

To synchronize a file:

1

Select the folders you want to synchronize in both the left and right FTP panels.

In the screenshot below, the intention is to sync the Spark folder on the local computer (on the left), with the Spark folder on the server (on the right).

The Synchronize option works only when you have two directories with the same name selected in both in the left local files panel and the right remote files panel. If the folders you select are not named the same, the synchronize will not work.

2

Click the Sync button in the middle of the interface.

3

The Synchronize window appears.

You need to choose which files you want to take priority by selecting either the
Keep Local Files
radio button or the Keep Remote Files radio button.

For example, if you updated files on your local computer, and these are the latest files, then you would choose the Keep Local Files radio button.

Or, if you know that the latest files are on the server and want to synchronize with the server, you would choose the Keep Remote Files radio button.

TIP: If you're not sure which files are the latest, you can look at the modification dates to see which are the more recent.

After you've selected the appropriate radio button, click Synchronize.

The Synchronize progress window appears. Wait until the blue progress bar goes all the way to the right, to show you that all your files have been synchronized.
